Well... I haven't listened to metal since I was 16 which is quite a while ago... but this game has reminded me why i liked it!
That said, this is a game review, not a genre review... So,
STORYLINE: I like it, jack black doesn't annoy the hell out of me for once and I also really like the character, plus the extensive and brutally interesting choice of characters and famous metal based voices. the storyline is surprisingly good for a game based in a heavy metal universe, cause to be honest some of the things i have seen in the past based on a universe of metal have been worse than the smell of my nan's tights. Well done Tim schafer, thank you for a good storyline again.
GRAPHICS: they ain't no realistic shizum of colours, lights but they make sense to the overall style and comedy of the game, great graphics for a cartoony style. the areas of the open world map also look good and different from eachother unlike some open world games where everything looks like the same piece of grass stuck to slightly different sheds and huts all in a very dark mysterious brown and grey shade. There is a good amount of colour diversity within this game.
GAMEPLAY: it is the most important thing so I'm glad they got it almost right. the gameplay is like an ageing dog, one minute everything is fast and insanely hyperactive and then suddenly there is a rather slow and annoying bit, but the feel of the controls, the vehicles, characters and aims of the game including the comical RTS style moments are good old fashioned computer gaming fun. apart from the occasional glitch where you get stuck between two rocks because you wanted to drive at top speed (Which is insanely fast at times may i add) up a mountain you can't go up, well, apart from that it's great.
MULTIPLAYER: I've only played multiplayer online a few times so far and to be honest, I like it, didn't think i would, but i do. It's hard at times, even frustrating, but then who doesn't remember what C&C and Dawn of war were like? If you don't play them, totally different to Brutal Legend but with the same enjoyment and annoyance.
TROPHIES: mainly the typical type, collect this amount of that, get this many of these, do a bit of storyline and you get one... on the other hand there are some interestingly fun and highly addictive ones that take some time and are very hard work but well worth the effort. Whether I will go for playing it through a 3rd time on Brutal I do not know, I do not know if i will ever get a platinum on this one as I can't see myself playing the storyline again, though maybe in the future as this game ain't a trade in, it's a keeper purely down to the brilliance of the idea and multiplayer.
PRICE: well I personallly do not think any game is worth £35 or above unless it is something like little big planet where it is turely customisable down to it's roots. This game is good but unless a game involves being able to make your own levels I'd say it's worth a maximum of £30, which is what I paid.
OVERALL: I think if you like metal or jack black, comedy or racing around killing things, Real time stratergy like no other or just open world gaming, give it a go, you'll be in for a shock, it's better than i thought it would be, little short but then the multiplayer/skirmish is perfect to keep you playing.
I'd give it 8/10 Guitar solos
